Dark-pop princess Charli XCX returns to New York with some fantastic opening acts in tow.
Even if you don't know Charli XCX by name, you know her songwriting. The UK dark-pop darling penned Icona Pop's breakthrough hit "I Love It," which was pretty much one of this year's most inescapable songs. But hopefully it won't overshadow Charli's own music for long, because her solo album, True Romance, is also one of this year's best debut records. Charli's own music puts her in murkier territory, with hazier beats, edgier lyrics, and a more shadowy aesthetic, but not without a huge level of pop accessibility. She was an obvious match as tourmate for Marina and the Diamonds (with whom she also released a fantastic collaborative track), and now she's back in town in the headline slot, where she's likely to remain.
LA-based band Kitten have also been on the rise for quite some time, and their latest EP takes their 80s-inflected synth-pop to new levels, most notably on the epic "I'll Be Your Girl."
Mad Decent poster child LIZ, meanwhile, plants both feet firmly in the R&B world, making soulful pop with a gift for melody that makes it clear why Diplo is getting behind her. Under "Artists We Also Like" on her Facebook page, LIZ lists Beyoncé about 20 times in a row, which pretty much says it all.
