Chuck Palahnuik’s Fight Club has become part of the American cultural lexicon, a story of anarchistic glee that has since risen from cult favorite as both novel and film to institution. Unbeknownst to many of the the novel and/or film’s fans however, is that ‘Project Mayhem’ was not entirely a fabrication of Palahnuik’s, but was in fact based on a very real and very active entity. The Cacophony Society, born and San Francisco with chapters later popping up all over the West Coast, operated as an underground art and action group throughout the 80’s and 90’s, surreptitiously altering billboards, leading tours of San Francisco’s sewer system, and even hosting the first parties that would eventually become Burning Man. For the release of Tales from the San Francisco Cacophony Society, Chuck Palahnuik hosts a conversation with members of the Cacophony Society, discussing their past triumphs and the cultural possibilities they embody.
