Affectionately referred to as the sixth borough by Mayor Bloomberg, New York's waterways are given their due at today's day-long river fete. Among the festivities are free boat rides, outrigger canoe training, stand-up paddle boarding, on-water rowing demonstrations, and the first cardboard kayak race, where teams are charged with constructing a seaworthy vessel with which they then take to the water. For those wondering what's going on with the waterfront post-Sandy, roundtables with harbor stakeholders are also planned. To get in on the fun, just find your way to Governors Island, Liberty State Park, or one the other 25 waterfront sites participating.
