In his newest work, Joshua Nissen King presents his peculiar perspective in an evocative show where his paintings will literally spill from the canvases onto the gallery walls and floor. Classic Cars West Gallery is excited to host this solo exhibition, CONT’D, which will open on Friday, April 4, 2013 from 6-10 pm. Classic Cars West is a member gallery of the Oakland Art Murmur and the opening coincides with the monthly Oakland First Fridays street festival.
King is an original, unfettered, and feverishly creative artist working predominantly to create what he terms "stream of consciousness" paintings. Treating the creative process as a catharsis and beginning without sketches or blueprints, his work reveals planes of color, seemingly cut-out figures, and fully rendered forms that leave the viewer with a sense of subtle frisson. His style is natural and his work reveals a true translation of his imagination to form. The use of dimension in his work adds immediacy while occupying the viewer's prolonged gaze.
King’s work questions traditional painting practices, while simultaneously referencing the embedded nature and the clear demarcation of classical styles in his own paintings. His work explores the construct of “correct” vs.”incorrect” in the application of medium, the illusion of perspective as well as the social dynamic in the presentation of the figure in imaginary space.
