West coast premiere of a multimedia look at a journey through Arctic waters.
For her latest multimedia music theatre performance extravaganza, Cynthia Hopkins tunes her accordion to the climate crisis. A departure from previous works, which see her mining her own psychodramas, This Clement World grapples with the big polar bear in the room. Inspired by a three-week expedition she took with Cape Farewell to the Arctic, the piece, directed by DJ Mendel, blends documentary and fiction in search of a new reality; one in which the global community wakes up and starts realizing our actions (or non-actions) have consequences. An ambitious performer, Hopkins animates her tale with stunning footage from her trip, outlandish characterizations, and original avant-folk songs performed with support by a 15-piece musical ensemble. It's hard not to be charmed by the Hopkins experience, we heartily recommend catching her live.
