Youth in revolt at the Castro Theater with a double feature of cinematic middle fingers to the man. Daisies (1966) is a milestone of both feminist filmmaking and the Czech New Wave, a hilarious and surreal romp in which a pair of brash young women challenge the idea that anything is too sacred to be made fun of. Banned by Czech authorities upon its initial release, Daisies went on to win the Grand Prix of the Belgian Film Critics association. Up second is Times Square (1980), a tale of two teenage runaways in the Big Apple complete with as bitchin’ a soundtrack as one could hope for that’s become a cult classic of punk rock girl power rebellion, cited by Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hannah as one of her favorites.
