Convention-style mashup of collectible toys and pop art.
Designer Con, now in its eight year, is the ultimate place for fans, creators, and retailers of collectible figures, designer toys, and pop art to converge. Held in Pasadena, the show is organized by Ben Goretsky and Ayleen Gaspar, who share a devotion to designer toys and Los Angeles' lowbrow art scene. Frank Kozik and Sucklord are among the artists included in this year’s event, with over 200 vendors on hand selling their wares. Trekkies are in for a treat: the restoration of Star Trek’s Enterprise-D Bridge is prime for photo ops. Among this year’s other events: the DKE "Graveyard" Toy Drive, a fundraiser for the LA Fire Department's "Fire of Love” featuring damaged action figures at great prices; low-brow art king the Sucklord and his Third Annual Suckathon; and “The "99 Deaths of Jar Jar,” a 99-artist show dedicated to creative ways of killing off the Star Wars saga's most annoying character.
