The 1970s are a golden age in American film. But for every Altman or Cassavetes there is that other classic - the disaster movie. These pre-CGI gems are corny time capsules featuring veteran movie stars, celebrity athletes and popular TV actors of the day facing their impending doom bedecked in sequins and wide lapels. The pre-explosion set-up always featured a song, which is where "Disaster!" comes in. This silly musical set on a floating casino built on a NYC fault line has no original score; instead, creators Seth Rudetsky, Jack Plotnick and Drew Geraci insert era standards to move things along. Unlike other jukebox musicals, the songs are an easy fit. Fans of the genre will recognize the stock characters that were always in the wrong place at the wrong time: the older couple enjoying retirement, the younger one apart but in L-O-V-E, the Sagan-like scientist dressed in turtleneck and corduroy, the single mom/singer, the bratty kid (here twins played by fast-talking quick change artist Jonah Verdon) and, of course, a singing nun, who in this evening's entertainment has a gambling problem. "Disaster!" is as much fun as its campy inspiration.
