Essential cinema as selected by Film Comment magazine
A series we look forward to every year, Film Comment Selects returns to parade some of the unsung gems of cinema. The carefully curated slate, which is cullted together by the editors at Film Comment, features new works by old masters, recent discoveries, and classics that merit another theatrical airing. For its 14th edition, 22 films are screening of which 17 are New York premieres. In the mix, you'll find new films by notable directors Bernardo Bertolucci, Hong Sang-soo, Lukas Moodysson, and Lasse Hallström, as well as a special marathon screening of Jane Campion’s TV miniseries Top of the Lake starring Elisabeth Moss. As for works by rising filmmakers, warranting your attention are Sean Ellis' Sundance Audience Award winner Metro Manilla; Matt Saville's Aussie thriller Felony; and Korean filmmaker Noh Young-seok's sophomore feature Intruders. In the classics department, receiving a dusting off are early works by Barbara director Christian Petzold, David Jones' Betrayal (1983), and Blake Edwards' The Carey Treatment (1972).
