It's been quite a year for documentaries. In fact, upwards of 145 nonfiction films qualified for the Best Documentary Oscar. This series, organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, features the 15 films that made the shortlist, as decided by preliminary voting among members of the Academy's documentary branch. Included in the lot are Sea World sinker Blackfish, Sarah Polley's Stories We Tell, Lucy Walker's The Crash Reel about snowboarder Kevin Pearce, and The Act of Killing, Joshua Oppenheimer's film about the Indonesian death squad leaders.
