If any interstellar vessel were to power its engines with rock, Hawkwind would be the fuel of choice. SInce 1969, the English forerunners to both punk and space-rock have been dropping acid and blowing minds with a tripped out blend of hippie logic and metal aggression. Lemmy famously cut his bass playing chops with Hawkwind before leaving to form Motorhead, and the band has collaborated with everyone from Pink Fairies’ guitarist Paul Rudolph to science fiction author Michael Moorcock. Throughout it all, line-up changes and nervous breakdown inducing LSD trips, Hawkwind has somehow persisted and remain today some of the most celebrated performers in rock.
