When hip-hop culture was at its zenith in New York City in the 1980’s, one man more than almost any other managed to capture on film the burgeoning movement, which offered as fresh a take on fashion, art, and life in general as on music. Jamel Shabazz’s nostalgic look back on that magical cultural epiphany became a phenomenon with the publication of “Back in the Days,” a collection of his photography from the era of Adidas and Sta-Press, a collection which director Charlie Ahearn explores in depth in his documentary “Jamel Shabazz Street Photographer.” As much about the spirit of an age as the man who captured it on film, “Jamel Shabazz Street Photographer” is essential viewing for anyone fascinated by one of the most exciting moments in New York’s long and storied history.
