Join acclaimed author and MacArthur Fellow Jonathan Lethem as he discusses his highly anticipated new novel, Dissident Gardens, with journalist Madeleine Brand.

Dissident Gardens is an epic yet intimate family saga about three generations of all-American radicals. As the decades pass—from the parlor communism of the 1930s to McCarthyism to the Civil Rights Movement to ragged 1970s communes to the Occupy movement—Lethem’s vivid storytelling reveals that the personal may be political, but the political, even more so, is personal.

Lethem is a prolific essayist and author of eight novels, including Motherless Brooklyn, which won the National Book Critics Circle award for fiction. He is the Disney professor of creative writing at Pomona College.

Madeleine Brand is best-known for her work on National Public Radio as co-host of Day to Day and as a contributor to Morning Edition.
