A look at Shades of LA, a project featuring 10,000 photos reflecting LA's diversity.

Kathy Kobayashi, co-architect of Shades of L.A. takes a look back at the landmark project, which was launched in 1991 and resulted in a compelling archive of 10,000 photos of diverse Southern California families, copied by Photo Friends from family albums for the LAPL Photo Collection. Former Shades donors and volunteers are encouraged to come. Following the program, copies of the companion book Shades of L.A: Pictures from Ethnic Family Album, co-authored by Kobayashi and former LAPL photo curator Carolyn Cole, will be available for purchase.
