The System premiered at the 2011 Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival.
It won the Cine Star award 2011 at the film festival in Schwerin, the DEFA advancement award at the film festival in Cottbus and was nominated for the German Film Prize for Best Actor.
With this screening, the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles continues its collaboration with the Villa Aurora’s artist-in-residence program. Under the label “Villa @ Goethe,” artists residing at the Villa Aurora have the opportunity to showcase their projects (past, present, and future) with the friends, patrons and guests here at the Goethe-Institut.
The Villa Aurora is an artists’ residence and historic landmark located in the former home of exiled German-Jewish writer Lion Feuchtwanger and his wife, Marta.
To promote and foster German-American cultural exchange and to remember the European exiles that settled in Southern California, Villa Aurora offers a variety of public lectures, screenings, and performances. Discussion with filmmakers Marc Bauder and Dörte Franke, and reception following the screening.
Marc Bauder studied business management in Cologne, St. Gallen and New York, and film production at HFF Konrad Wolf in Potsdam-Babelsberg. In 1999 he and Dörte Franke founded the production company bauderfilm.
His documentary grow or go inspired a theater play (by Falk Richter), which premiered under the title of Unter Eis at the Schaubühne Berlin in 2004. Bauder's own stage version of the film premiered at the National Theater in Brussels in 2010.
In 2011 his debut movie The System was released to high acclaim. His documentary “Master of the Universe” about the international banking system and stock markets premiered at Semaine de la Critique in Locarno and won the Jury Prize.
Dörte Franke’s parents, both dissidents in the GDR, were redeemed by West Germany and the family moved to the BRD. Franke studied political science in Cologne and dramaturgy at HFF Potsdam.
In 2001, she published her novel Some bet, others wait (die einen wetten, die anderen warten) followed by thinkwithyourhead (denkmalimkopf) in 2002 (both dtv).
Together with Marc Bauder, she founded their production company bauderfilm and produced some award-winning documentaries.
As a scriptwriter Franke is represented by “Verlag der Autoren”.
