Most great artists are not afraid of being controversial and Matthew Barney is a perfect example. A former jock and male model, the sculptor and filmmaker caught the art world’s undivided attention with his Cremaster Cycle, a set of five visually stunning feature-length films made between 1994 and 2002, which later became the subject of a traveling art exhibit organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. His latest endeavor, River of Fundament, which recently premiered at BAM, is an incredibly ambitious work loosely based on Norman Mailer's Ancient Evenings that clocks in at nearly 6 hours. For tonight’s event, Barney sits down with the former Royal Academy of Arts curator, Sir Norman Rosenthal, for what promises to be stirring discussion.
