The MoMA Nights 2013 music series includes indie acts selected by MoMA’s PopRally committee (July 4, 11, 18, and 25), and concerts related to the exhibitions Soundings: A Contemporary Score (August 1, 8, and 15) and American Modern: Hopper to O’Keeffe (August 22 and 29).
Each Thursday evening in July, MoMA Nights features an up-and-coming band selected by MoMA’s PopRally committee. PopRally is a program of events organized by a cross-departmental committee and held at MoMA and MoMA PS1.
August marks the opening of the first major exhibition of sound art at MoMA, Soundings: A Contemporary Score. The show presents 15 recent works—from rare field recordings to a resonating subway bench—which together suggest that how we listen determines what we hear. MoMA Nights features experimental music and sound works by pioneering composer Pauline Oliveros and by three artists in the exhibition: Camille Norment, Stephen Vitiello, and Tristan Perich.
The artists featured in the exhibition American Modern: Hopper to O’Keeffe drew inspiration from the tremendous changes unfolding in the United States in the first half of the 20th century. In a similar vein, the music of two new American moderns, Adam Brisbin and Jerron Paxton, celebrates this country’s rich musical traditions while creating exciting new work for contemporary audiences.
In the event of rain, the Sculpture Garden will close, and music will take place in Theater 1 or Theater 2. Please note: Sculpture Garden and indoor seating are limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.
