“The Crossing of the Visible” is a new theatre piece regarding appearance and negation. A series of fragmented scenes emerge: A hooded figure incommunicado. A child at her bedtime prayers. Vox humana. A threshold.
The title is drawn from Jean-Luc Marion’s collection of writings on the phenomenology of image. The production draws further inspiration from Goya’s etching “The Sleep of Reason.” Existing in a space too intimate for words, the almost wordless performance evokes a dreamlike world exploring, above all, presence.

Since its founding in 2010, Ashes Company has developed a distinctive, evolving theatre of forms supplanting the primacy of text. Its work incorporates many different arts, including architecture, movement, sculpture, and sound. The group seeks the tension and majesty that can only emerge from a distant objectivity. In doing so, the company’s work embraces dynamic relationships between spectator and image, appearance and negation, finite and infinite.
