New York city produces 11,000 tons of household trash on a daily basis, all conveniently whisked away from our curbs and removed from sight with little to no thought required from us.

The flow of a city's garbage is an integral part of urban life: the more efficient waste management is, the less visible it becomes. In her book Picking Up, Robin Nagle examines the lives and livelihoods of our city's sanitation workers, having joined the labor force herself to experience firsthand how New York City deals with its refuse problem.

Dr. Nagle joins the Obscura Society Thursday, March 20 to share her insider's perspective on the myriad of ways that garbage has shaped our city and the heroic men and women who make a career out of cleaning up for the rest of us.
