Join us for an evening discussion of cartography, the rare-map trade and the notorious art thief who garnered a fortune stealing and dealing invaluable maps.
E. Forbes Smiley III was a well-respected antiquarian map dealer until a stray razor blade dropped in the rare book department of the Yale University library exposed his criminal double life and lead to his arrest in 2005. Over the course of four years, Smiley stole millions of dollars worth of rare maps, using his inside knowledge and professional connections to gain access to the most exclusive collections in the world.
The New York Obscura Society proudly welcomes author Michael Blanding to join us July 14 at ACME Studio to discuss his recent book, The Map Thief: The Gripping Story of an Esteemed Rare-Map Dealer Who Made Millions Stealing Priceless Maps. In addition to revealing the astonishing story of E. Forbes Smiley, Blanding will guide us through the early history of mapmakers, illuminating the enormous impact that cartography has had on our understanding of the world around us and the inherent cultural value held within these rare and highly coveted pieces of our past.
