Following a short hiatus spent producing Roky Erickson's record and exploring other collaborations, Will Sheff re-assembled his Austin-born band to release I Am Very Far in 2011. The album, like its five Jagjaguwar predecessors, affirmed Sheff's gifts as a master lyricist and weaver of impeccably orchestrated, lush, thick soundscapes. Flash-forward to 2013, and Okkervil River have another album under their belt, this time with support from a new family, Dave Matthews' label, ATO Records. The Silver Gymnasium is more evidence of brilliance at work. With I Am Very Far, Sheff sought to both satisfy and challenge himself, but with the new record, he seeks to reach out to others and show them a good time. An autobiographical work set in a New Hampshire town from Sheff's childhood, The Silver Gymnasium is a tribute to the spirit of pre-adolescence; a time of innocence lost. Tonight the band plays selections from their shiny new work at Terminal 5. Also the bill, blues/funk/soul master Black Joe Lewis, who tours in support of his band's recent Vagrant Records release Electric Slave, and Seattle soul rockers Pickwick.
