Shophouse, a Southeast Asian fast-casual restaurant, has opened their first West Coast location, right across from the Hollywood Arclight. Owned by the guys behind Chipotle, Shophouse serves customized bowls of healthy, flavorful bowls with bright flavors and heaps of veggies. The owners were inspired by the meals they ate while traveling in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore, and that comes across in the bold, complex flavors of the house-made sauces and curries and fresh vegetables and herbs. You begin with a base (jasmine rice, brown rice, chilled rice noodles, or salad), then add a protein (grilled chicken satay, steak laab, pork and chicken meatballs, or organic tofu), then your choice of various wok-cooked fresh vegetables, including green beans sautéed with caramelized shallots or eggplant with Thai basil, one of three sauces (red curry, green curry, or tamarind vinaigrette), a garnish of green papaya slaw or pickled vegetables, and then a finish crispy toppings that include toasted rice, crushed peanuts or crispy garlic. The result is a mega-tasty and healthy meal that is both gluten-free and dairy-free.
