One of Hollywood's most glamorous happy hours can be found at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
If you're seeking a happy hour haunt with sophistication and old Hollywood glamour, Public Kitchen and Bar is a prime choice. Located in the glamorous Spanish Colonial Revival building that is home to the historic Hollywood Roosevelt, Public offers happy hour at their bar, a long, beautiful slab of marble atop dark wood that extends from the front of the dining room around to the famed lobby. Featuring a 5 for $5 menu, the five items are a rotating specialty cocktail (which normally runs $14), an appetizer special that changes daily, wine (both red and white), well drinks, and draft beer. The rotating cocktail special includes such tasty libations as the Kentucky Brunch, a medley of Old Overholt Rye, apricot marmalade, lemon, and egg white; and the Spiced Cucumber Collins, a composition of Hendrick's gin, lime, shishito pepper, cucumber, and mint. The food offerings? Perhaps the menu's happiest surprise is the chicharrones. Nothing like the ones found in a cellophane bag in a supermarket, these are thick cut, fried, and topped with chili and lime, and taste like bacon to the nth degree. They often appear as the rotating appetizer, as does a mushroom tart with taleggio cheese and arugula, the chickpea and three cheese fritters with zatar aioli, or burrata with bagnet vert and cherry tomatoes, all of which are on the regular menu at between $8-$13. More delicious options perfect with a cocktail or glass of wine are from the "to share" section of the menu, including the potato tart with caramelized onion, gruyere, and guinciale; the chicken liver terrine served with grilled bread and huckleberries; and the kale salad with currants, pine nuts, pancetta bread crumbs, and garlic vinaigrette. Enjoy them in the bright, airy room highlighted by amber glass light fixtures that provide a warm glow that lends happy hour at Public a classic feel befitting its location.
