Folk rock followed by psychedelia down by the river
Tonight's freebie is another fine example of why it's great to be a music fan in New York in the summertime. Part of the Hudson River Park's RiverRocks series, which has hosted such indie acts as Deerhunter, Yeasayer, Grimes and Dan Deacon in years past, this evening's outdoor concert features the much buzzed about Los Angeles-brewed duo Foxygen. Governed by an appreciation for music from the 60s and 70s, the pair, who have been touring in support of We are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic (2013), deliver a psychedelic sound that is playful yet respectful of their sonic forefathers. If you dig on the Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground or Bowie, Foxygen's songs should absorb quickly into your bloodstream. Also on the bill are the captivating Thao Nguyen, and Australian band the Aves.
