Photos of 100 spanked buttocks named by the late Mike Kelley are tender and titillating.

Let’s no beat around the bush (pun intended): Sheree Rose’s debut exhibition—consisting of photographs of one hundred spanked asses snapped at underground SM clubs in the 80’s and 90’s—contains rather explicit content. However, as striking as the images of bruised buttocks are, they’re more than just documentation of fringe fetishistic culture; Rose’s exploration of sexuality and gender within the world of sadomasochism exposes an interesting paradox: Pain is beauty and beauty is pain. A close friend of the late Mike Kelley, Rose named the series after the artist’s poem, “One Hundred Reason,” and Kelley, in turn, gave each photo its own title. Ultimately, there’s any intimacy and a sense of trust that emerges from the portraits of fleshy bottoms that makes the act of spanking seem like a tender caress.
