In the first of two volumes of his magnificently illustrated cultural history The Story of the Jews—a tie-in with the forthcoming PBS series of the same name—Simon Schama details the story of the Jewish people, tracing their experience from ancient times to the opening of the New World in 1492. Spanning millennia and the world—from Egyptian bazaars to the streets of Paris—this volume begins the epic history of Jewish struggle, endurance, innovation, and joy. Schama is University Professor of Art History and History at Columbia University in New York, and the author of numerous documentaries and books, including National Book Critics Circle Award winner Rough Crossings. A Q&A and book signing follow the program.
