Second Sundays, 2pm - 5pm, Feb. - May 2014 (Feb. 9th, Mar. 9th, Apr. 13th, May 11th)

Story of This Place: A project exploring the local, contemporary song literature, and situating the songwriting and performance of Gautam Tejas Ganeshan.

Four songwriter sessions in early 2014 at the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Distinguished local songwriters, convened by Gautam Tejas Ganeshan, exploring four themes in song: Intelligence, Care, Moment, Remaining.

Four performances in late 2014 of new work by Gautam Tejas Ganeshan - original compositions in the tradition of South Indian classical music, drawing from both Carnatic music tradition as well as the ethos of the local songwriting community. Presented at the Subterranean Arthouse - just a stone's throw down Bancroft Way from the BAM/PFA.

In India, every sacred site has a "sthala puranam", or "story of this place" - an oral history of local flora and fauna, mythical elements, land ownership, etc. - how it came to be what it is now. For some places it's widely known, and for others it's scribed in a secret place under a pavement stone. And what about for this place? It's the bards and griots who tell the tales and sing the stories.

A collaboration with the Subterranean Arthouse (Berkeley), and part of "The Possible" Exhibition 2014 (BAM/PFA). Supported by the Creative Work Fund, a program of the Walter and Elise Haas Fund.

Free with admission to the museum.

Presented by Subterranean Arthouse.
