Our favorite documentary series returns with its winter session

Luckily for New Yorkers, every season is documentary season thanks to Thom Powers and Raphaela Neilhausen's superbly curated quarterly series, Stranger Than Fiction. For its winter edition, the STF looks to music for inspiration and features eight documentaries that will likely get your toes a tapping. Highlights include Nelson George's Finding the Funk (1/28), which is narrated by Questlove and traces the past, present and future of funk; Timothy Greenberg-Sanders' Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart (2/4); and the D.A. Pennbaker classic Monterey Pop (2/18). The series also includes a special Thursday night screening of Ken Burns' Central Park Five. As in past seasons, representatives from the films are slated to appear for post-screening Q&As.
