Musicians come together to perform Big Star's iconic album
"I never travel far, without a little Big Star," so sang the Replacements in 1987 of the Memphis-born power pop project led by Alex Chilton. One of the most influential American rock bands of all-time, Big Star is lionized tonight with a full orchestrated live performance of the band's 1978 release Third. An all-star indie cast including Sharon Van Etten, Kurt Vile, Pete Yorn, and Marshall Crenshaw take to the microphone supported by a backing band featuring Mike Mills, Richard Lloyd, Ken Stringfellow, and original Big Star member Jody Stephens. But, where would Third be without its groundbreaking string arrangements? A 20-piece chamber orchestra is also part of this evening's program. With its $0 price tag, how can you pass up this little slice of rock heaven on earth?
