Multimedia arts exhibition by SMC Contemporary Art Theory and Practice students and Linda G López.
Upstairs at the Market Gallery is pleased to present Takeoff and Landing, a sequence of four group exhibitions featuring a variety of media and subject matter. Takeoff and Landing is the latest show in an annual multimedia arts exhibition series produced by students in the Contemporary Art Theory and Practice Program at Santa Monica College, and curated by Linda G. López, Professor of Art.
This year’s exhibition takes the inspiration for its theme from the constant air traffic at the Santa Monica Airport, which is directly adjacent to the hangar-turned-studio environment in which López’s students make their work. It is hard to ignore the incessant and ominous roar of airplanes taking off and landing just outside the studio; in fact, the aviation environment serves as a potent metaphor for the creative process each artist must undertake in order to “land” at the finished artifact. The artist’s flight patterns never cease, as each landing prompts a new takeoff towards a new artistic destination.
This exhibition includes installation, video, painting and drawing, mixed media, and performance.
Takeoff and Landing will be the final Contemporary Art Theory and Practice exhibition series held in conjunction with the Upstairs at the Market Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. The old produce market complex in which it is located is slated for renovations that will commence in mid-2014.
Takeoff and Landing is open on Saturdays only: July 6th, July 13th, July 20th and July 27th, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
