From covert actions in Afghanistan to the re-creation of mass killings by Indonesian death squad leaders, 2013 was an explosive year for documentaries. This weekend you can view what made Oscar’s cut at this two-day cram session. Saturday features three of the five nominated feature-length films, including Zachary Heinzerling and Lydia Dean Pilcher’s endearing story of an artist couple, Cutie and the Boxer; Richard Rowley and Jeremy Scahill’s Dirty Wars; and Morgan Neville, Gil Friesen, and Caitrin Rogers’s portrait of the unsung heroes of music, 20 Feet from Stardom. Sunday’s schedule includes Joshua Oppenheimer and Signe Byrge Sørensen’s the Act of Killing and Jehane Noujaim, and Karim Amer’s film about the Egyptian Revolution of 2011, The Square.
The Paley Center for Media is pleased once again to screen the Feature Documentaries nominated for the Academy Awards. These weekend screenings give Paley Center visitors a unique chance to see all the documentary features before the 86th Oscars telecast on Sunday evening, March 2.
