Featuring members of both Woods and Vivian Girls, the Babies are as good as you hope they are
The BabiesHemlock Tavern (1131 Polk Street, San Francisco, CA) Map it $8
When Kevin Morby of Woods and Cassie Ramone of Vivian Girls decided to start a band together, no one doubted that the result would be worth a listen, and Brooklyn, New York’s the Babies are most certainly worth a listen, or two . . . or twelve; afterwards it’s doubtful you’ll be able to get their catchy hooks out of your head. The Babies pick up where Vivian Girls left off on 2011’s Share the Joy, infusing girl group pop punk with Morby’s folky songwriting pedigree to create lo-fi rock magic. And it’s not just the Babies who are worth the price of admission tonight: Tony Molina of Millbrae’s infamous Ovens manages to take the best parts of Queen, Weezer, the Beach Boys, Black Sabbath and Dinosaur Jr. and distill them into the most rocking minute and a half of your life, over and over and over again.
