MoMA's annual survey of the past year's top studio releases and film festival fare
A great way to get on top of your cinematic game, this annual series finds MoMA's curators cherry picking the best and brightest films that were either released theatrically or played the festival circuit this year. Consisting of documentaries, mainstream, foreign-language and art-house, the Contenders has a little something for everyone. Highlights of the 2013 class include the lovable Cutie and the Boxer, Richard Linklater's Before Midnight, the Saudi Arabian-shot Wadjda, Sarah Polley's wonderful personal documentary Stories We Tell, Joel and Ethan Coen's ode to 1960's folk singers Inside Llewyn Davis, and Destin Daniel Cretton's indie foster-care drama, Short Term 12. Special guests appear at select screenings. Visit MoMA's site for full details.
