Join Tom Marioni, Jim Melchert, Mike Lai and Jennifer Locke for a night of humorous, introspective and engaging performances at Southern Exposure. As part of the exhibition, The Long Conversation, this cross-generation group of artists showcase idea-based, experimental and time-based artwork just as relevant today as it was in the pioneering days of early Bay Area Conceptualism.
Marioni performs his stand-up routine, honed over the past three years in both public and private sessions, often over beers with friends. Melchert reads 100 Statements About Myself, a partially updated version of a performance he delivered in 1992 at the request of James Lee Byars. Lai collaborates with Charming Hostess, a music ensemble at the intersection of voice, text and diaspora consciousness to recreate the sound from a kung fu film scene live, in the gallery, beneath a projection of the film. And Locke performs a sculptural action within the confines of Southern Exposure’s exhibition space.
This event is part of The Long Conversation, an exhibition and performance series organized by Southern Exposure, presenting work by current and former Bay Area artists whose practices are rooted in the strategies of the West Coast, alternative, idea-based, experimental and time-based artwork pioneered in the 1970s. Organized in conjunction with Southern Exposure's 39th Birthday, the exhibition features actions, videos, performances, installations and events presented both on and off-site.
