The Tecza Puppet Theatre had humble beginnings in 1946 using a horse-drawn carriage as a travelling family troupe. Elzbieta and Tadeusz Czaplinscy performed their first work on Christmas day of that year and never looked back. After twenty years, the theatre was nationalized and set down roots in the northern Polish town of Slupsk where it remains to this day. Their dedication to rich traditional Polish storytelling, coupled with a unique history of employing some of Poland’s finest puppeteers, has earned Tecza the distinction as one of the preeminent puppet theatres in Central and Eastern Europe. The raucous sounds of the Warsaw Village Band are sometimes described as “hard-core folk”. Their unhinged approach to traditional Polish music brings the past into the 21st century. Leader Wojtek Krzak embarked on a trek to learn the music of his native country in the flat plains of Mazovia (birthplace of Frederic Chopin) and the Tatra Mountains, in an effort to capture his heritage before it faded away. Now, playing authentic Polish instruments such as the 17th century Suka violin, this rousing band keeps the musical skills of their elders alive for their own generation.
