Who is the mysterious Space Lady of San Francisco? Armed with only a Casiotone keyboard, accordion, winged Viking hat, and her entrancing and ethereal melodies, Susan Dietrich, aka The Space Lady, performed lo-fi electronic Arthur Russell-esque covers of radio-pop hits like David Bowie’s “Major Tom” and The Sweet’s “Ballroom Blitz” on the streets of the city for decades before moving to Colorado in the early 2000’s. The outsider artist extraordinaire only released one CD of recorded material in her long career, and probably would have faded into total obscurity if not for the evangelistic fervor of her devoted fans who rightly believe she’s one of the best things to happen to honest and honestly weird music this half of 1950.
