CUTIE AND THE BOXER: Screening and Q & A with Director Zachary Heinzerling, and Ushio & Noriko Shinohara

Presented by BRIC and Adam Schartoff of Filmwax Radio

BRIC and Filmwax Radio are proud to present an evening with the filmmaker & subjects of the Oscar-nominated documentary, CUTIE & THE BOXER. Please join Adam Schartoff, host of the popular indie film podcast, Filmwax Radio, filmmaker Zachary Heinzerling, and Ushio & Noriko Shinohara for a screening in the BRIC House Ballroom and post-screening discussion on the Stoop of one of the most entertaining films of the past year. CUTIE AND THE BOXER has had a rich festival life, premiering at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival where it won Best Director Award for Heinzerling. The film went on to screen at myriad festivals including Tribeca Film Festival, the London Film Festival and the Full Frame Documentary Festival to name just a few. The film also had a successful screening last summer with Rooftop Films and also enjoyed a theatrical release. To cap it off, it is an Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature.

SYNOPSIS: In New York City in 1969, 19-year-old art student Noriko fell in love with 41-year-old avant-garde artist Ushio Shinohara and put her career on hold to marry and support this rising star of the Manhattan art world. After 40 years, their roles shifted. Now 80 and still struggling, Ushio is consumed with reinforcing his legacy via his ‘boxing’ paintings, while Noriko is now finding her own creative voice through a series of drawings entitled “Cutie And Bullie” that depict their chaotic relationship and her desires to escape her husband's shadow and be respected as an artist in her own right. "Cutie And The Boxer" is a powerful and poignant documentary about creativity, sacrifice, and a love that is its own unique work of art.

BRIC’s Stoop Series illuminates the arts and life around us in Brooklyn through artistic performances and presentations, framed by dynamic conversations with some of the city’s most innovative artists, thinkers, and tastemakers. Programs will explore the performing arts, film, media, visual arts, spoken word, and other creative fields. Engage with of the most innovative artistic voices in Brooklyn's ever-expanding cultural scene on the monumental interior stoop of BRIC House, Brooklyn's new home for the arts in downtown Brooklyn.
