WORN Fashion Journal and Drawn & Quarterly present Strong Female Leads, a discussion about that elusive category: women and their role in the publishing industry.

The appearance of women in publishing is often regarded as a new scientific phenomenon: categorized, ranked, identities reduced to pie charts in the name of diversity. But the lack of diverse voices seen on bylines isn't a new problem; likewise, the emergence of women-run magazines, mastheads, and imprints is not an overnight phenomenon. Women have always been active consumers and producers of all kinds of written media. They've developed strong communities, engaged loyal readers, and built substantial archives - achievements that cannot be measured in numbers and statistics.

On Wednesday, May 14 at 7pm, join WORN Fashion Journal and Drawn & Quarterly for a panel discussion featuring Ayesha A. Siddiqi, Laurie Henzel, Marjon Carlos, and Serah-Marie McMahon. Our panelists come from various kinds of media - from independent print publishing to brand new digital platforms. Together with moderator Fiona Duncan, they'll discuss their thoughts, experiences, opinions, and goals as women creating space for original kinds of publishing on their own terms and measured by their own standards.

MORE ABOUT THE PANELISTS:

Ayesha A. Siddiqi is a culture critic, writer, and editor. She is currently a contributing editor at The New Inquiry and the Ideas Editor at Buzzfeed.

Laurie Henzel is BUST’s Co-Publisher and Creative Director. She received her BFA from Parsons School of Design. Prior to BUST, she did design production work for Rolling Stone, Spin, and Nickelodeon and launched her own boutique design company, creating album and CD packages for influential indie bands and major music labels. In 1993, she partnered with Debbie Stoller to art direct a women’s ‘zine called BUST. Together they have grown BUST from a photocopied b/w zine into an award-winning international glossy bi-monthly with a circulation of 70,000. Laurie resides in Brooklyn with her husband, photographer Michael Lavine and her two daughters Olive and Penny.

Mary H.K. Choi is a writer and producer based in New York. She is a contributing editor at Allure and Wired and her work can be seen in InStyle, The New York Times Magazine, Cosmo and GQ. She has written comic books for Marvel and Vertigo and produced shows for MTV and Vice.

Serah-Marie McMahon is the Editor-in-Chief of WORN Fashion Journal, as well as the Editor of the recently released book, The WORN Archive, published by Drawn & Quarterly in May 2014.

MORE ABOUT THE MODERATOR:

Fiona Duncan wears clothes. She also reads them. She reads everything. She is a writer and bookseller living in New York. Her writing has appeared in Bullett, New York Magazine, and Adult, amongst others.

ABOUT WORN FASHION JOURNAL:
WORN Fashion Journal is an independent print publication based in Toronto, Canada. WORN is a completely different kind of fashion magazine - instead of discussing trends or commerce, WORN discusses the histories, personal stories, cultures, and subcultures of fashion. In May 2014, Drawn & Quarterly will publish The WORN Archive, a collection of articles and editorials from Issues One through Fourteen of WORN.
