As much a study of photography itself as an exhibition of her own style, Suzanne Mooney's Photographing Girls explores the area behind the viewfinder — the Lacanian, quasi-perverted gaze in which subject becomes object and flesh becomes fetish. Via blown-up screens of appropriated images from magazines and portraits, Mooney conducts an examination of both the photographer-as-artist and the actual person releasing the shutter. With her magnified repossessions of diagrammatic females from photography manuals, Mooney disassembles technique and style, reassigning the images to offer further insight into the mass medium through which she communicates.
