The Country Wife tells the story of Horner, a rake and a trickster who plots the mass seduction of women in London society. By feigning impotence, Horner gains unprecedented access to the wives of the town without raising the suspicions of their cuckold husbands. First performed in 1675, William Wycherley's restoration comedy was deemed too controversial and pulled from the stage until 1766, when David Garrick's "cleaned-up" adaptation was produced. Full of double entendres and sexual romps, this hilariously lewd play is directed by Jonathan Kent with a cast led by David Haig, Patricia Hodge and Toby Stephens.
