Art: Photography Emily Allchurch: Urban Chiaroscuro: Works after Piranesi

Emily Allchurch's artworks are multilayered in both construction and concept. Using her own photography, Allchurch reconstructs historical masterpieces by piecing together hundreds of disparate fragments to create a convincing whole. The body of work making up this exhibition concentrates on 18th-century Italian etcher Giovanni Battista Piranesi's Imaginary Prisons series. Escher-like in their aesthetic, the Allchurch works use photographs of architecture from around Europe to re-create Piranesi's nightmarishly infinite visions of control and claustrophobia. With CCTV cameras and alarms scattered throughout the space to illustrate our own society's reliance on surveillance and control, Allchurch's history lesson also incorporates contemporary commentary.
