Focusing on the essential third item when brush hits canvas, Piers Secunda — as the title of his exhibition suggests — likes paint. Yet this is not a study of the merits of Burnt Sienna, or of acrylic over oils; instead, Secunda manipulates paint in a way that transports it from the semi-liquid state that one would expect into a medium unto itself. Décollage, appropriated text and posterboard poke in and out of his work, as layers of paint echo the warped corners of advertising banners. Solid items are reassigned in paint, with mechanical constructs appearing from daubed oils and dried acrylics. Secunda creates sculpture not in bronze or clay, but with the flattest of an artist's materials.
