Casanova was the original ladies' man, sleeping his way around Europe. But with Hayley Carmichael cast in the role, the seducer becomes a seductress. Opening with a prison break and featuring a Kama Sutra sequence that's more slapstick than erotica, Casanova is a saucy romp, with plenty of laughs hiding a dark underbelly. Beyond the pan-European sex acts, Carol Ann Duffy's production charts Casanova as she becomes muse to Voltaire and Mozart. The clever publicity — a rococo revamp of the infamous Athena tennis-girl poster — sets the tone perfectly: cheeky, unexpected and funny.
