Expat British artist Chris Welsby returns from Canada to present two recent works, At Sea (2003) and Lost Lake #2 (2005). Through his adroit manipulation of film technology, Welsby launches an exploration of the natural world both as a medium and as a message. In his pioneering early films, such as 1972's Wind Vane (showing as part of the BFI's complementary Welsby retrospective), the camera's shutter speed is controlled by the wind in a visual melding of nature and technology. And the digital revolution has only deepened Welsby's hypnotic, complex images. In his recent works, the artist contemplates waterscapes to mesmerizing effect.
