The Empire's take on traditional pantomime always manages to surprise and delight adults, children and reviewers alike. This year's swashbuckling, Pirates of the Caribbean-esque version of the classic rags-to-riches tale of Dick Whittington and His Cat is set in medieval London. The cast is formed of West End musical stars, ably headed up by comedienne Tameka Empson of 3 Non-Blondes notoriety as Fairy Bowbells, and the ultimate dame, Olivier Award-winner Clive Rowe, as a larger-than-life Sarah the Cook. The nature of the story leads us to expect plenty of topical London mayoral gags, so Ken and Boris may want to think twice before booking front-row seats.
