In Nick Waplington's solo show at Whitechapel Gallery, the artist experiments with a new medium and creative approach. As one of Britain's leading contemporary photographers, Waplington has chronicled life in London, covering street parties, festivals and demonstrations and searching for — within these mass gatherings — a close intimacy with the individuals involved. For this particular exhibition, however, Waplington's delves into constructed reality. Manipulated images of landscapes make up the installation, which snake beyond the gallery's walls and out onto the street. Even in this unfamiliar medium and subject matter, Waplington still works to maintain a sense of familiarity in the foreign.
