Tchaikovsky's perennial Christmas favourite can be seen in two innovative incarnations this year: Matthew Bourne's kitschy, kaleidoscopic version at Sadler's Wells, and the English National Ballet's popular interpretation, choreographed by Christopher Hampson, at the London Coliseum. The latter, designed by satirical cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, features sets that include giant domestic appliances, and costumes that are both colourful and eccentric. Magician Drosselmeyer is a flamboyant cross between David Copperfield and Elvis, the toy soldiers are dressed in camo gear and classic scenes are given new significance in this modern adaptation.
