Fans of Beatrix Potter look away now – Laura Ford's incarnations of the author's beloved characters are enough to give fully grown adults nightmares. In Ford's world, the animals, sculpted in bronze, are down on their luck and on the streets: hedgehog Mrs Tiggy-Winkle is a bag lady trundling along with her belongings piled in a pushchair, and Mr Brock, the badger, rifles through a bin for scraps, while foxy Mr Tod is swathed in blankets trying to keep warm. This dystopian vision, which juxtaposes comforting childhood images with facts of everyday urban existence, is a tale more cautionary than fairy, looking at contemporary city living and the marginalised sections of society.
