Dating from the late Victorian era, this pub — an old favourite of blood-spattered meat traders from Smithfields Market down the street — has just been beautifully renovated. The landlord is keen to retain its antique character with bar snacks such as pickled eggs and cockles in vinegar, but if you're after something more substantial to soak up the ale, they also serve fried whitebait, chops and hearty meat pies. Two giant mains cost about £18 and are guaranteed to leave you stuffed. If you're too full or inebriated to make it home, you can also always reserve one of the six luxurious bedrooms above the pub and sleep off your hangover.
