Set against the backdrop of the Iraq war, David Hare's The Vertical Hour tells the story of Nadia Blye, an American ex-war reporter who has retreated into academia. Nadia travels to rural Shropshire to meet her lover's father, Oliver — a liberal doctor with a passionate antiwar stance — and soon finds that everything she believes is up for debate. The drama between public and private lives plays out as Nadia defends the choice to intervene by drawing on her experiences in Sarajevo and Baghdad. As the play unfolds, however, she is slowly beguiled by the idealistic and opinionated Oliver.
